The range comprises three models. These are the Hochiki IFD-E, the intrinsically safe IFD-E (IS), and the explosion-proof IFD-E (Exd). The Hochiki IFD-E is a standard IR3 flame detector - a detector that views the flame at three wavelengths - that is particularly suited for use in high-risk petrochemical installations, as it is ideal for detecting flames from burning aviation fuel and petrol, natural gas, butane and hydrogen.

It is also the right choice for fires involving solid materials such as grain, feeds and paper. The intrinsically safe model is certified to the ATEX Directive EEx ia IIC T4, while the explosion-proof version is certified to EEx d IIC T6.

The detectors are suitable for a wide variety of industrial applications, as they are not affected by convection currents, drafts or wind; they are also unaffected by fumes, vapours, dust and mist. So, in addition to petrochemicals, Hochiki believes the new IFD range meets the needs of the aviation and pharmaceutical industries, storage facilities, tunnels and waste and recycling operations. They have a minimum 90 degree field of view and respond to flames more than 25 metres away. The new Hochiki detectors provide Class One performance when on their high sensitivity setting, as set out in BS EN 54-10: 2002 - Fire detection and fire alarm systems (flame detectors) - and offer the in-use benefit of optical self testing.

They incorporate volt-free contacts from two latching or non-latching internal relays RL1 (fire) and RL2 (fault or pre-alarm) that can communicate the detector's status to the control equipment. The detectors are normally configured to latch into an alarm state when a flame is detected; in non-latching mode the detector produces an alarm signal only when a flame is in view, resetting itself to normal when the flame has gone.

Hochiki Europe (UK) has been active in the fire safety market since 1986, and is a subsidiary of the Tokyo-based Hochiki Corporation that was founded in 1918. Today, Hochiki Europe is headquartered in Gillingham in Kent and designs, manufactures and markets a broad selection of premium-build fire detection and alarm products and systems throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
