Any non-automatic fire fighting equipment provided is easily accessible, simple to use and indicated by signs.
- Emergency routes and exits must be indicated by signs; and emergency routes and exits requiring illumination must be provided with emergency lighting of adequate intensity in the case of failure of their normal lighting."

The effectiveness of a sign must not be adversely affected by:
- Poor design, insufficient number, incorrect positioning, poor state of repair or incorrect functioning of the signs or signalling devices.
- Depending on requirements, signs and signalling devices must be cleaned, maintained, checked, repaired and if necessary replaced on a regular basis to ensure that they retain their intrinsic and/or functional qualities.
- Signs requiring some form of power must be provided with a guaranteed emergency supply in the event of a power cut, unless the hazard has thereby been eliminated."
The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) specifies the need for safe egress and evacuation of disabled occupants in an emergency situation. Fire, health and safety signs conforming to the requirements of BS 5499 Parts 1 and 5 and sited in accordance with the requirements of BS 5499 Part 4 will meet the requirements of the DDA subject to employees receiving sufficient and repeated information on the meaning of signs and actions that are needed to be taken in conjunction with signs.The above standards reflect the specific needs of building occupants with dyslexia and learning difficulties by making sure all supplementary text was in lower case to make comprehension much easier.
