The London Fire Brigade has gone live with 1500 Bodyguard II electronic monitoring units on each of its Draeger PA 94 Plus Breathing Apparatus sets. The roll out, which took just four months from start to finish, required that kit was converted overnight to minimise disruption and ensure availability the next day.

Roy Bishop, Deputy Commissioner at the London Fire Brigade comments, 'The change over has been very successful and we are very pleased with the results. As an added bonus, the addition of Bodyguard has meant that we have become the only Brigade in the country to be able to change our air consumption rates from 40 to 50 litres/minute without having to replace any gauges. Bringing added safety to our firefighters, the Bodyguard units are also helping us with our investigations into Telemetry.'

Geoff Avis, Group Manager at Protective Equipment Group (PEG), Croydon, comments 'Much quicker than anticipated, the conversion was relatively easy and allowed us to go live in December 2006. Since then, our firefighters have been able to benefit from a safer system of working by experiencing the real operational benefits that Bodyguard can bring including accurate time-to-whistle based on real-time usage, as well as an integrated distress signal unit. The addition of Bodyguard II also means that we can continue our investigation into Telemetry, which is designed for use in conjunction with Bodyguard, having recently completed extensive trials of the PSS Merlin system in the London Underground.

Perry Jones, Sales and Marketing Director at Draeger Safety explains, 'Offering a host of previously separate warning and monitoring devices within a single instrument, the Bodyguard II utilises simple push-button controls and an LCD display to provide fast access to essential information. This includes time to whistle, which is calculated on current air consumption and is refreshed every twenty seconds, digital pressure reading in bar, a simulated analogue gauge and temperature indication. In addition, every time Bodyguard II is activated it automatically carries out a series of self-tests which can include a high pressure leak test, if prompted.'

Perry Jones adds, 'At the forefront of technology and providing optimum safety, Bodyguard II offers two completely independent end of service time indicators (EOSTI), consistent with NFPA 1982:1997, a visual warning with twin red warning lights and a pneumatic whistle warning unit of 90dBA. An optional third alarm is available in the form of an electronic whistle in the Bodyguard unit. The ADSU/PASS alarm and built in motion sensor support JCDD/38 and additional safety is provided via a visual warning with twin red warning lights and a low battery warning. The unit also features an easily located manual distress button.'

Using Draeger's IR Link II software, Bodyguard II can be tailored to suit individual requirements and offers a datalogging facility for post-incident analysis. The addition of Bodyguard II units also means that the London Fire Brigade sets are now ready for Telemetry when used in conjunction with the Draeger PSS Merlin system.
