High Rise Building Vote

Following 9/11 the importance of evacuation within high rise buildings and means of escape via stairwells is ever present.
High rise buildings are globally used for office blocks in cities; New York was the first major city to adopt regulations requiring Photoluminescent strips installed on steps, hand rails and the perimeter of enclosed stairwells in office blocks.
Although fires are rare the preparation for these emergencies is now a legal requirement for companies with more than 5 employees since the introduction of the Regulatory Reform Order.
Fire safety within high rise buildings is a hot topic for the fire industry; with thousands of office blocks worldwide and terrorism ever present these buildings contain hundreds of workers who place their safety in the hands of their managers and employers.
Fire safety signs are now a legal requirement following the new order, the use of Photoluminescent signs throughout buildings ensure that escape routes are visible in all conditions including power loss and sever smoke.
These signs must be properly placed throughout buildings; Means of Escape is due to launch a new fire safety signs guide enabling employers to educate themselves in this crucial area.
The symposium on High Rise Building Egress Stairs which took place in New York on 15th May highlighted these points.
Mohammed Ettouney the symposium chair states,
?Whereas codes presently size and protect stairwells to accommodate the occupant load of a buildings largest floor, under the assumption that fire is the principle hazard and it will be confined to the floor of the fire origin, we now find proposals for enhancing and enlarging stair construction to meet perceived threats of bombings, blackouts, CBR agents, and other catastrophes ? events that will likely entail evacuation of the entire building whether warranted or not?.
