Appearing before the Runcorn Magistrates Court on July 5th, Antonio Meloni, aged 68, of Albert Road, Widnes, admitted eight counts of breaching the Regulatory Fire Safety Order 2005.

Blocked escape routes, locked fire escapes and an inadequate fire alarm system - some of the serious breaches revealed during a route fire safety audit.

The court heard that the Mr Meloni had converted the top two floors of his three story property into a number of flats and that the fire risk to those flats were so dangerous, firefighters had to stop them being used.

As reported in Runcorn & Widnes World, Mark Abram, head of community fire proection, said: “This was a case of someone failing to understand their responsibility as a landlord to provide an adequate fire risk assessment on their properties, something which ultimately could lead to a loss of life.

“I would urge people who are unsure of their responsibilities, to get in touch with us for help and guidance.”

Afting working with the fire service to implement a fire risk assessment, Meloni has now reopened the first floor flats. Althought the top attic rooms are likely to remain closed.

Meloni was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay £2,500 court costs.
