The Fire Industry Association aiding fire safety best practice in commercial premises

Wednesday 23rd November 2011, Brighton
Supported by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service
The Fire Industry Association (FIA) is pleased to announce that they will run a Fire Safety Seminar on Wednesday 23rd November, with support from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
The half-day event, which takes place at the Holiday Inn Brighton Seafront, will help educate those responsible for fire safety in all types of commercial premises. The Seminar is being opened by Desmond Prichard, Chief Fire Officer at East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, who will inform attendees of the main fire safety concerns of the local fire service.
There are simple, cost effective ways to protect residents, staff and businesses from fire and the FIA aims to help the public make commercial properties more fire safe.
The event will provide clarity about fire safety duties of the Responsible Person, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, in all commercial premises including, office and retail buildings, care homes, sleeping accommodation, and warehouses.
The seminar is relevant to owners of commercial premises; facilities managers; health & safety managers; building designers and consultants who wish to learn about the importance and benefits of incorporating fire safety management protection measures. No matter what size the business, this seminar will help them provide a safe environment for occupants and staff alike.
Major fires often result in businesses being unable to recover and closing down. The economic cost of fire in the UK is on the increase. In 2008, commercial fire damage cost £865 million, up 15% on 2007.
Where a building is not destroyed there can still be significant commercial pressures on the owners and operators resulting from the large losses incurred. Business interruption following fires in 2008 resulted in insurance claims of around £200m.
The UK, with its strict fire regulations has not been immune to large numbers of fires. In 2008, the Fire and Rescue Services attended fires in many different types of buildings including:
• Retail distribution – 3,700 fires
· Restaurants, cafes, public houses etc – 2,600 fires
· Industrial premises– 1,800 fires
· Recreational – 1,400 fires
Delegates learn key fire safety points related to their working environment as well as having the chance to talk to the local Fire and Rescue Service, manufacturers, installers, suppliers and maintainers of fire protection equipment, and fire risk assessors.
It’s just £10 + VAT to attend this event. Places are limited so visit www.fia.uk.com/en/Events to confirm your place. For more information call Monica Keats on 0203 166 5002.
