With the changes brought about in 2006 by the Regulatory Reform (Fire) Order, property owners or managers are firmly in the ‘firing line’ as the responsible person when it comes to ensuring that their customers, employees and property are protected against fire risks. By using providers registered with BAFE you are going a long way to ensuring that you are taking appropriate steps to achieve this.

BAFE is the independent, third party registration body for the fire protection industry and as a not for profit company, works to ensure that their schemes for companies who provide fire alarms, portable extinguishers and emergency lighting systems are relevant, comprehensive and meet the needs of end users. Over 750 companies are now registered to these schemes. As the CLG website points out: Third-party certification schemes for fire protection products and related services are an effective means of providing the fullest possible assurances..’.

The key starting point for ensuring appropriate fire protection is to have a Fire Risk Assessment carried out by a competent person. Despite several highly reputable competency schemes from fire organisations, there is no common standard or company quality scheme to reassure clients. Following serious, well-publicised fire incidents in recent years a Competency Council has been established to provide criteria for individuals and BAFE is in the process of developing a quality scheme for companies. This scheme (SP205) should be available from early 2012 and will ensure that there is a third party certification regime available through BAFE licensed, UKAS accredited certification bodies.
