Fire Industry Association to Help Provide a Safe Environment for Businesses

FIA Fire Safety Seminar
Thursday 9th June 2011
,
Holiday Inn Reading West
Supported by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service
The half-day event, which takes place at the Holiday Inn Reading West, will help educate the Responsible Person of all commercial properties about fire safety. The Seminar morning, which is being opened by the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, will provide clarity about their fire safety duties, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
The event is relevant to those responsible for fire safety in all commercial businesses including office and retail premises, care homes, sleeping accommodation, and warehouses.
The seminar will inform owners of commercial premises; facilities managers; health & safety managers; building designers and consultants about the importance and benefits of incorporating fire safety management protection measures. No matter what size the business, this event will help them provide a safe environment for occupants and staff alike.
Major fires often result in businesses being unable to recover and closing down. The economic cost of fire in the UK is on the increase. In 2008, commercial fire damage cost £865 million, up 15% on 2007.
Where a building is not destroyed there can still be significant commercial pressures on the owners and operators resulting from the large losses incurred. Business interruption following fires in 2008 resulted in insurance claims of around £200m.
The UK, with its strict fire regulations has not been immune to large numbers of fires. In 2008, the Fire and Rescue Services attended fires in many different types of buildings including:
· Retail distribution – 3,700 fires
· Restaurants, cafes, public houses etc – 2,600 fires
· Industrial premises– 1,800 fires
· Recreational – 1,400 fires
There are simple, cost effective ways to protect residents, staff, and the business; the FIA aims to help the public make commercial properties more fire safe.
In the same year in the UK, there were 451 fire-related deaths and 12,200 non-fatal fire casualties . Fires in premises such as sleeping accommodation, especially those catering for the elderly, hotels and guesthouses – accommodating people not familiar with the building- present their own serious hazards. In particular, evacuation of the building at night with limited staff may prove difficult.
Delegates learn key fire safety points related to their working environment as well as having the chance to talk to the local Fire and Rescue Service, manufacturers, installers, suppliers and maintainers of fire protection equipment, and fire risk assessors at the table top exhibition.
