Draka’s Firetufplus® Enhanced-category 0HLS® halogen-free circuit integrity alarm cable has been installed throughout one of London’s latest skyline landmark office buildings. Designed by architects Sheppard Robson, the 24,619 square metre, glass-fronted One Kingdom Street building is the latest addition to the impressive PaddingtonCentral development alongside Paddington Station. Such was the focus on sustainability that the building has earned the coveted “Excellent” status, the highest achievable BREEAM [BRE Environmental Assessment Method] rating.

The build quality has ensured that One Kingdom Street is already fast approaching full occupancy and has attracted several of the City’s leading commercial enterprises. These include software specialist, Mysis, Vodafone, and energy exploration company, Statoil.

The Draka cable was chosen by Essex-based contractor, EA Electrical, for the nine-storey building’s fire detection and alarm system as it offers the extended cable integrity when exposed to fire and continues to provide the necessary power to the detection and alarm system that is essential for the safe evacuation of staff and visitors from high-rise buildings. Firetufplus satisfies the Enhanced category requirements of BS 5839-1:2002+A2:2008 [Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. Code of practice for system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance]. It provides 60 minutes fire and mechanical protection, followed by 60 minutes of fire, mechanical impact and water protection. The cable is manufactured to BS 7629-1:1997 [Specification for 300/500 V fire resistant electric cables having low emission of smoke and corrosive gases when affected by fire. Multicore cables].

Commenting on the decision to opt for Firetufplus, EA Electrical’s Contracts Director, Terry Burkin, says: “The spotlight has really been turned on ensuring safe evacuation from multi-storey buildings in recent years. This can often take some time to achieve and the entire fire detection and alarm system depends on the cable continuing to function.” He continues: “We chose Draka’s Firetufplus because it comes with the added assurance of being third-party tested and approved by both LPCB [Loss Prevention Certification Board] and BASEC [British Approvals Service for Cables].

Firetufplus also provided EA Electrical with a number of cost and labour-saving bonuses. It offers the ease of installation associated with a pliable cable, including lower termination costs, availability in long lengths, and twisted-core construction that improves signal clarity.

Derby-based Draka UK is the country’s leading designer and manufacturer of fire performance cables, halogen-free power cables and building wires.
