Fire safety retailer and wholesaler Safelincs have developed an innovative free service to remind householders to regularly test their smoke alarms. By simply going to the Safelincs website anybody with a smoke alarm can register to receive a regular reminder to test their alarm by email or SMS text message.

Safelincs are one of the partners of the government's Fire Kills campaign, whose latest advertising campaign focuses on the dangers of smoke in a household fire. The advert "Don't drown in toxic smoke" highlights that just two or three breaths of toxic smoke are enough to render you unconscious.

Many householders have now taken the important step of installing smoke alarms in their homes. But that's just the beginning. It's equally important to ensure that they are regularly tested and maintained. When firefighters put out house fires, they find that many families' smoke alarms aren't actually working. Often the batteries are dead or have been removed. This service from Safelincs will help to drive down the number of flat batteries or faulty alarms and contribute to making households safer.

When householders log on to the Safelincs reminder page www.safelincs.co.uk/reminders they are asked how frequently they would like to be reminded to test their alarms and if they would like the reminder by email or SMS text message. At the same time they can register to be prompted when it's time to change the battery - every twelve months for a standard battery or five years for lithium long life batteries. And by entering the date at which they installed their smoke alarm they will be reminded when it's ten years old and should be replaced.

This free service is open to all.
