Long gone are the days when simply saying, 'In case of fire, call 999,' would pass as a sufficient response to a fire. Today?s building owners and managers must actively prepare the buildings occupants to effectively respond to a fire, including the provision of accurate, clear fire escape plans and regular staff training.

Recent developments in international standards for fire escape plans (ISO 23601) have highlighted the need for all business?s to review their provision of escape plans, the information they provide and the way that this information is presented.
Our experience shows that most companies fail to implement usable fire escape plans, with most continuing to rely on CAD floor plans, updated with the most basic of information. These often to fail to do anything other than confuse the reader, are often out of date and in some cases may direct the reader in the wrong direction.

Building owners and managers have a legal and moral responsibility to ensure that staff, residents and members of the public are aware of all fire exits, alarms and extinguishers in the case of an emergency.

Hotels that have been relying on provision of text based instructions, in multiple languages are now finding that these not only fail the requirements of international standards, but their suitability be questioned as part of a review of the fire risk assessment.

This situation is likely to become more pronounced for all business's in the coming months as awareness of ISO 23601, it's requirements and what consists of a true, workable fire escape plan becomes more common place, specifically amongst those with responsibility for enforcing fire safety legislation.

The provision of clear, simple and easily actionable escape information is crucial to ensure the safety of the buildings occupants. Large, clear and simple to understand pictorial information is key and removes the need for lengthy, multiple language instructions. These large images also make the escape instructions more accessible to those with visual impairments, foreign visitors and those unfamiliar with the buildings layout or location of alternative escape routes and exits.
