Is It A Fire? Let's Wait And See

With the fire alarm bell clearly ringing in the background the participants were filmed talking to each other about what was possibly happening, reassuring each other that there was nothing wrong and then settling back down to fill in the market research forms, in fact only standing up to make themselves cups of tea!
Director of iHasco, Bradley Worsfold said "Their behaviour was typical of any group of people in this type of situation - they look round for someone to take the lead, and if no one does, they stay put. People were actually filmed joking about the possibility of burning to death and then doing nothing!" These first few minutes are crucial during a real fire and can mean the difference between life and death.
The test was repeated with a different group of people, this time introducing a Fire Warden to take control and the difference in their response was remarkable - with clear direction the participants unquestioningly evacuated the room calmly and safely.
With over 80% of companies never reopening or failing within the first year after a fire it is amazing that so many companies do not have sufficient fire training. Companies now have to comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. This short study of fascinating human behaviour forms part of iHasco's fantastic new Fire Warden Training Programme.
