Visitors to this year's Cheshire County Show at Tabley near Knutsford, Cheshire were protected by the very latest portable fire extinguisher technology supplied and installed by Wilmslow-based Fire Protection Consultants. The company is one of a select number of dealers for the German-made TOTAL range of portable extinguishers that was launched in the UK early last year.

Malcolm Fleury of Fire Protection Consultants, which also provided fire safety equipment for last year's show, worked closely with the Show's Executive Director, Nigel Evans, on the selection and siting of 80 TOTAL portables for the 250-acre site. The result is that the 60,000 or so visitors to the two-day Show - billed as "the premier two-day County Show in the North West" - were protected by a number of different types of extinguisher, each selected to offer the best protection for a particular hazard. These include CO2 [Carbon Dioxide], foam and powder portables that have proven track records for successfully extinguishing a wide variety of fire risks.

"With around 250 trade stands selling a host of different products, and attractions such as a food hall, a country pursuits section, agricultural suppliers, motor vehicles and riding tack, the Show organisers rightly considered visitor safety to be an overridingly important consideration," says Malcolm Fleury. "So, they were insistent on having the most reliable fire safety equipment. We convinced them that the build quality of the TOTAL portable extinguishers surpasses anything else on the market."

Virtually every stage of cylinder manufacture is under the direct control of TOTAL. This includes material selection and sourcing in Europe, the most advanced low-heat plasma welding, fabrication, assembly and high-performance powder-coating, cylinder pressure testing and agent filling. "This commitment to quality," says Malcolm Fleury, "is underpinned by uniquely numbering each and every TOTAL cylinder to provide a complete and reliable quality audit trail".
