A New Approach To Personal Safety
Workers are subjected to hazardous risks on a daily basis throughout the globe, with risks increasing due to exposure in new climates and extreme working conditions so too must the protection provided to our workers.
Apparel is varied and generally confined to a specific working field, personal protective equipment needs to be evaluated and assessed to ensure workers are provided with the right protection to improve efficiency and reduce risks during occupational activities and emergencies.
From 6th April the New Corporate Homicide Act became law whereby organisations can be found guilty of corporate manslaughter.
With this new legislation on the horizon organisations need to ensure they are providing the correct equipment and safety training to all staff to provide a duty of care.
Any fatality or serious injury caused to an employee due to a gross breach of the duty of care will be on the shoulders of the 'responsible person' under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
A paper presented at ATCE in November last year outlines a high-level overview of personal protection studies and research conducted by Gardin-Haag over 18 months. The work concluded areas where an improved understanding of human behaviour, workplace hazards, latest technology and materials can collectively contribute to reducing exposure risks by up to 50%.
The results identified the need and opportunity to harmonise protection requirements, hardware connectivity and real-time situation awareness into an
Integrated Personal Safety (iPS) System that is the subject of 3 years R&D. The completed research and studies so far represent the initial phase of a new joint industry project (JIP) which now invites stakeholders in personal safety to get involved.
Gardin-Haag is inviting Hazardous Industries Representatives to have their say through participation in the program, ensuring your ideas and requirements are included.
The program requires base-line surveys of the widest range of sites, locations and hazards through cooperation and support from site owners, contractors and manufacturers.
