Race Is On To World Firefighters Games 2008

Next summer, the birthplace of The Beatles will host the Games for 10 exciting days - and the city is gearing up for this exciting spectacle.
The WFG08 extravaganza runs between August 24 and September 2, and is expected to attract more than 5,000 firefighters from around the world.
Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is extremely proud to be hosting the Games as its contribution towards the city's European Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008. This will be the 10th World Firefighters Games, and Merseyside fought off strong competition from Dubai and Northern Ireland to win the bid to host the 2008 Games.
The Games will take place in and around the city, with some events reaching out as far as Southport, North Wales and Manchester - making it a real North West experience.
WFG08 General Manager Dave Robinson commented: "We extend an open invite to all our Fire Service colleagues, both operational and non-operational, to come to Liverpool and take part in the World Firefighters Games 2008. It is our intention to make this the most successful Games ever, but we need your support to make this happen.
"We have a very exciting sporting and social programme lined-up for you, and can definitely promise you 10 days to remember. We look forward to giving you a warm Liverpool welcome".
A programme of more than 70 sporting events means there will be something for all abilities in both individual and team sports, featuring everything from chess, poker, table tennis and fishing, to football, triathlon, snowboarding and boxing, as well as a Firehouse Cook-off and the Iron Dog contest.
However, the showcase event will be the Toughest Firefighter Alive (TFA) competition, the ultimate test of a firefighter's strength and stamina. This contest will be fought on St George's Plateau with the stair-run up St John's Beacon (the Radio City Tower).
The Games is extremely inclusive and firefighters, serving and retired, and their immediate family are eligible. It is not just local authority firefighters either as firefighters from industrial/commercial, civil aviation, military and volunteer fire services are very welcome to come and compete and enjoy the varied social programme with their firefighting colleagues.
A spectacular Olympic-style opening ceremony will start the proceedings at the Games Village - the city's new £142 million Liverpool Echo Arena, situated on the city's World Heritage waterfront.
WFG08 is recruiting 1,500 volunteers who will play a major role in delivering a successful Games, with Everton Football Club on-board as WFG08 Volunteer Partner.
MF&RS will lead the way in 2008 - by being the first World Firefighters Games hosts to encourage people with disabilities to participate and to have a thriving Community Engagement programme.
In the lead up to the Games, WFG08 is also running a global fire-themed photography competition, inviting amateur snappers of all ages to get involved.
