Every year there are around 800 fires in homes providing care for older persons. On average three people die each year as a result, and a further 84 are injured.

These unfortunate statistics have prompted the launch of Wise up to Fire, a campaign to support all those in the care business who are affected by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety Order) 2005 that came into force at the end of 2006. Further requirements have also been imposed by the 2006 version of Approved Document B of the Building Regulations for England and Wales, which imposes additional fire safety, measures in new and modified care premises.

The Fire Safety Order has wide-ranging implications for care home owners and managers many of whom are still unaware of the legislations or their new obligations. Wise up to Fire - the initiative established by the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association (BAFSA) - aims to help provide solutions to these obligations, including the wider use of sprinklers to give increased cost-effective protection and confidence to care homes. Sprinkler systems are already required by law in new care homes in Scotland and similar requirements may be put forward shortly in the Welsh Assembly.

The campaign looks at creative, practical and cost-effective practices, and the steps that can be taken to improve fire protection measures, in particular the inclusion of fire sprinklers within care home fire safety systems.

BAFSA will be exhibiting at the Care Show, Stand B19, NEC on 24 and 25 October 2007.
