A care home in Farncombe, Surrey has been closed following a major fire which occurred at the beginning of September.

40 firefighters attended the blaze in the early evening extinguishing the flames billowing from a second floor apartment. A number of residents were still occupying the building forcing immediate evacuation to take place by the crew.

Ladders were used to rescue two residents from the upper floors while others were lead to safety. Two women, both in their nineties were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Simon Moore, area manager for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said,

'The first crews found a very serious fire in a second floor flat and a small part of the roof. They were also confronted with a number of persons still within the building, and they carried out two rescues using ladders'

All residents have moved to temporary accommodation until they can return to their homes. Grange Management, the housing company behind the scheme placed a number of residents into other premises owned by the company whilst others were found accommodation by Waverly Borough Council.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the blaze.
