The confidence and credibility gained through using the renowned BSI Kitemark, which is the UK's most recognised symbol of quality and safety, is a key benefit of the fire alarm systems scheme that is being offered by BSI Product Services. The scheme provides fire alarm systems businesses with a credibility that helps them gain more and bigger business whilst delivering to customers an assurance that the installation has been carried out to the highest standards, while also providing scheme members with third-party certification to the BAFE modular standard SP203.

The BSI Kitemark scheme for fire alarm systems is one of only four bodies in the UK that has accreditation by UKAS to issue certification for the scope of work, as defined by SP203.

The Kitemark Fire Alarm Systems scheme is designed to allow companies involved in the design, installation, commissioning and/ or maintenance of fire alarm and suppression systems to prove that they are competent and accredited and was designed by BSI to BAFE scheme SP203 for fire detection, alarm and suppression systems.

With many willing supporters, the scheme is set to become an industry standard for demonstrating capability in this field and proving to be a huge benefit for businesses who are now able to assure their customers that they can purchase confidently.

The scheme is a timely introduction to the market as the Fire Safety Order and the Fire (Scotland) Bill of October 2006 pull together virtually all existing fire safety regulations in a move which makes prevention of fire at least as important as fire precautions.

In addition the Chief Fire Officers Association in its drive to reduce false alarms has introduced a policy on attending call-outs by automatic alarms which means that alarms will need to be maintained by certified third party installers.

The BSI Kitemark Scheme for fire alarm systems installers is based on the BAFE Modular Scheme for Fire Alarm, Detection and Suppression Systems. Unlike comparable schemes that are only available to businesses that carry out all aspects of fire alarm installation, the BAFE and Kitemark modular schemes recognise that many professional fire industry service providers specialise in a specific aspect of alarm installation.

Four modules are offered - system design, installation, commissioning and handover, and maintenance. Installers may gain certification in any one or any combination of modules.
