Over the last few months I have discussed the importance of the role of the 'Nominated Person' and the taking control of their specific working area. This has highlighted the importance of the Fire Safety Risk Assessment process, the need to take control of assessment areas and maintaining of control of flammable substances.

This month I want to continue the control of risks with the subject of Electrical Equipment.

Every workplace environment uses electrical equipment, from computers to kettles - we are addicted to the 'plugging in for power' way of life. The problem is that we all fail to recognize the dangers attached to the misuse of these appliances, because electricity is silent and invisible we think nothing of it, yet it is electricity that is the cause of many devastating fires.

Managing electrical appliances is crucial in the workplace, rules on how many plugs per socket, the use of extension leads, plug leads and cables should be applied to maintain any safe work environment. Plus the discipline of ensuring that PATs testing is maintained on a regular basis.
