The corporate clothing, workwear and safety footwear industry has rushed to attend the 2007 edition of the director-e annual conference, with more than half the tickets already sold despite the conference being some four months away.

Titled 'Footwear & Clothing in the Workplace', the conference will be held at the luxurious Jurys Inn in Milton Keynes, just outside London, on October 16th 2007. Throughout the day, the conference will feature several of the industry's most authoritative members talking about a wide range of vitally important issues.

Yvette Ashby, founder of director-e, said: "We received an amazing level of support for our last conference, but even that could not prepare us for the reception we've had for this edition. I would like to thank everyone who has booked a ticket and look forward to seeing them at the show."

Also selling out well ahead of time are the exhibition stands, which will enjoy a prime position at the back of the lecture hall, where interested delegates can examine them at their leisure during the morning and afternoon breaks, and through the lunch period. A few exhibition stands are still available and are expected to be taken up well before October; current exhibitors include DuPont Personal Protection and the University of Northampton.

Sponsorship slots are also available, with overall sponsorship of the conference having been taken up by footwear and protective wear company CAT Apparel, which offers not just the famous branded boots, but also eyewear, overalls, headwear and even socks suitable for the workwear market.

Other sponsorship options have already been taken up by the Gore-Tex brand of waterproof/breathable fabrics, specialist fabric company C+ and Badgemaster, which has the Royal Warrant for producing badges for the royal households.

Most delegates have been attracted by the programme, which covers all areas of interest to the industry:

  • Footwear topics will be catered for by a number of speakers; Shoes for Crews managing director David Kirwan will look at "Safety in Technology", while David Storrie of world-famous WL Gore & Associates (makers of the Gore-Tex Fabrics) will look at "Footwear Innovation, Technology and Quality". JAL Group - one of the world's biggest international shoe manufacturers - will send its director, Stuart Thorne, to explain the "Essential Steps in Making the Right Safety Footwear Choice" and Philippe Albert of computer aided design company Lectra will explain "Technology Throughout the Footwear Creative and Manufacturing Process".

  • But it's not just footwear - workwear and corporate clothing will be examined too. In "Sourcing and Design", Patrick Durwernell of JCB Workwear will look at branding in safety products, while Jane Mills, fashion design course leader at The University of Northampton, will explore the effect of fashion on workwear and PPE. Additionally, Jan Pasfall of Mascot Workwear will look at how leisurewear is impacting on the workwear market.

  • Legal and technical issues will also be explored at the conference. Ivan Deceuninck, technical director at global fibre manufacturer Sioen, will give a run-down of the latest advances in European standards "Direct From Belgium"; and Austin Simmons, deputy chief executive of SATRA testing centre, will explain about CE marking footwear after testing.

  • Also, Muriel Johnson, formerly of supermarket giant Marks & Spencer, will look at "Ethical Trade", Tony McCaugherty, European specification manager of reflective company Reflexite Europe, will look at safety and standards in reflective clothing, and Andy Hinton, business development director for supply management software company Fast React Systems, will ask "Supply Chain Visibility: Are You In Control?"

  • But that's not all - director-e is also drawing on its contacts outside of the industry to look at what the buyers want. Karen Sparrow, head of uniforms at Virgin Atlantic Airways, will discuss what they look for when "Buying an Image"; Kate Selasse, crime scene investigation (CSI) manager for Greater Manchester Police, will look at obtaining suitable protective clothing for police CSI departments, and Martin Fraser, a member of the UK Fire & Rescue Service and project officer for the UK's enormously important Integrated Clothing Project, will be on hand to explain how this controversial and wide-ranging system has developed.

  • Malcolm Campbell, commercial director of the Woolmark Company, will chair the conference. The day will also include two tea breaks to give a chance for the delegates to relax, network and look at the exhibition stands, and an hour-and-a-half lunch break.
