A home sprinkler system which aims to protect vulnerable people caught in a fire is to be launched by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

Bosses officially unveiled the state-of-the-art equipment at a recent demonstration.

They were joined by Linda and Steve Croft, of Wingfield, Rotherham, with their 20-year-old disabled son Chris.

The family will become the first in the town to have their home fitted with the domestic sprinkler system.

Next Generation

Chris Croft is disabled and confined to his bed for much of the time, which would make it difficult for him to get out of the house, or for anyone to help him escape quickly in the event of a fire.

John Hoey, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's head of community safety, said: "Sprinklers are the next generation of fire safety and have a 99% success rate in extinguishing fires.

"They prevent fire spreading, save lives, reduce damage and reduce risks to firefighters."

The sprinkler systems, which work by heat activation, connect to a network of pipes which are filled with water under pressure.

When the heat of a fire increases the sprinkler to its operating temperature, it is activated over the fire and releases water over the source of the heat.
