Fire crews were called to a fire onboard the famous Cutty Sark in Greenwich Monday morning, one of London?s best loved tourist attractions the Cutty Sark is over 100 years old and famous for being one of the world?s fastest merchant vessels in the pre-steam age.

The ship was undergoing a renovation project following corrosion of the iron framework; the Cutty Sark was due to re-open to the public in 2009.

The restoration meant that 50% of the ship was thankfully not at the site, although the full damage caused is unknown The Cutty Sark Trust is positive the ship will be fully restored.

The items not at the site included the masts, coach house and a significant amount of planking.

Residents from the local area were evacuated due to the extent of the fire and risks involved, bus routes were diverted and the DLR wasn?t running Monday morning.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious and investigations are underway regarding the cause and damage involved.

There is currently no information regarding potential suspects but as there were numerous people in the area at the time of the blaze. Police are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

The fire was contained by the London Fire Brigade at about 6:30am.
