Thermo-Man® Put to the Test

Visitors to both Fire & Rescue and Safety & Health Expo 2007 will be able to witness spectacular scientific experiments in the outdoor demonstration area. Taking place at the NEC, Birmingham from 22-24 May 2007, the experiments will offer a dramatic look at the dangers of working in potentially flammable environments.
The DuPont THERMO-MAN®, a life-size mannequin equipped with 122 heat sensors, will be dressed in test garments and exposed to a flash fire with temperatures reaching up to 1000°C. The sensors will record the temperature rise on the surface of the mannequin while a computer will calculate the predicted percentage of second and third-degree burns a person might suffer under similar conditions.
Paul Clow, Regional Manager for DuPont Personal Protection in Europe, explains, "THERMO-MAN® testing is part of the service that DuPont offers to allow continual evaluation and improvement of PPE. This means that DuPont and the manufacturers of NOMEX® brand garments can together be proactive in supplying the correct protective garments for people who are exposed to the risk of heat, flames and electric arc. The protective qualities of garments can differ greatly, but seeing is believing. The THERMO-MAN® demonstrations give us an invaluable opportunity to demonstrate this to the people who have responsibility for evaluating and selecting protective clothing for workers exposed to these risks. We are delighted to be taking the facility to Fire & Rescue and Safety & Health Expo."
The presentations will take place every 1.5 hours in the Emergency Action Zone outside hall 9 at the NEC, Birmingham, during Fire & Rescue and Safety & Health Expo 2007.
