The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) is encouraging all organisations with fire protection systems to ensure they have certificated evidence to prove their systems meet the demands of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) and the Fire Scotland Act 2005. Effective from 1st October, the new legislation applies to almost all premises and covers virtually every type of building, structure and outdoor space, with the exception of domestic premises occupied by a single family.
A consequence of the RRO is that fire brigades will no longer issue Fire Certificates, placing increased responsibility on the "responsible person" at every premises. In a workplace, this is the employer and any other person who may have control of any part of the premises, such as the owner or occupier. As a result, evidence will be required to show that systems are fit for purpose and correctly installed and maintained in accordance to British Standards.

The most effective route to achieving this evidence is through certification from a third-party company involved specialised in the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems, such as those approved by the NSI, who are accredited to operate the BAFE SP203 Fire Protection Industry Modular Scheme.

London Fire Commissioner Sir Ken Knight, said: "This welcome new legislation represents a sea of change in fire protection policy, making it less burdensome and clearer. With responsibility for compliance now placed with employers, we recommend that organisations protect themselves and their staff by seeking third-party companies with accreditation from a recognised approval body to ensure their fire protection system meet the standards required".

NSI is an independent, not-for-profit approvals body that inspects companies involved with the design, installation and maintenance of electronic security and fire protection systems. Companies are robustly inspected on a regular basis to ensure they consistently comply with the required standards demanded by customers, insurers and fire services.
